Nafplio is a town full of history going back hundreds of years if not thousands, and was the first capital city of Greece before Athens became the capital in 1834. Adorned by castles and old walls still standing Nafplio has something intriguing for all types of visitors. The town has changed a number of hands during the years going from Franks to Turks to Venetians, something that is more than evident in its architecture. Small hanging balconies and narrow Venetian-style streets, Ottoman closed balconies and an abundance of neoclassical buildings all around. The castles in town attest to Nafplio's story as a well-sought after position and give it its old-time charm from Akronafplia, the ancient castle, to the sea fortress of Bourtzi & last but not least the imposing Palamidi Castle.
