Tolo or Tolon used to be a village whose inhabitants relied on fishing to make a living. It was first populated in 1834 during the Revolution against the Ottoman Empire, when Cretan refugees fled their homes to save their families, giving the place its first name, "Minoa" after the mythic king of Crete. In the 70s Greece started gaining in popularity as a summer destination for holiday of all kinds.
